Saffron is a spice derived from the flowers of the saffron crocus (Crocus sativus). The plant itself is also abbreviated saffron. Saffron, which for years has been the world’s most expensive spice by weight, grows naturally in Southwest Asia. It was cultivated for the first time in the region of Greece.
Characteristic of saffron are the bitter taste and smell of iodoform or hay. They are due to the chemicals picrocrocin and saffron. It also contains the carotenoid dye crocin, which gives a rich golden-yellow color to food. Because of these qualities, saffron is a much sought after spice for food around the world.

Saffron is also a valuable ingredient in the cosmetics industry. Saffron has the properties to relieve common skin problems, including acne.
Saffron has various proven skin-friendly properties. Among them are:
– Protects against UV radiation – the active compound Crocin, which is contained in saffron, has beneficial antioxidant properties that neutralize free radicals. Crocin protects against ultraviolet A (UVA) rays, which are responsible for premature skin aging.
